The girls varsity volleyball team defeated Class A foe Sacred Heart Greenwich 3-0 on Saturday, September 17, to kick off the season.
An impressive serving run by senior libero Kori Meissner got the Pelicans off to a strong start. Meissner recorded three aces from the stripe, giving the Pelicans an 11-3 lead in the first game. Junior Maddie Moenkhaus capped things off by recording two kills and a block, and game one finished 25-13 in favor of Loomis.
Sacred Heart made some adjustments in game two, and the Pelicans found themselves in a tight battle, down 8-7 early. Solid serving from senior Jill Rinaldi and sophomore Maisie Mueller helped the Pelicans take back the lead at 16-15, and then sophomore Aiste Bardauskaite recorded a key kill to turn the tide. The Pelicans took game two 25-22.
The third set started like the second, as both teams battled hard and fought for every point. Midway through the final set, the score was once again 16-15 in favor of the Pelicans, and a big serving run from Meissner settled the Pelicans and gave them a four-point lead. Sophomore Shaylee Moreno and senior captain Syd Hanley finished off the game with a kill each, ending the game 25-19 and the overall match 3-0 in favor of Loomis.
Up next, the Pelicans head to Gill, Mass., to take on Northfield Mount Hermon on Saturday, September 21, at 3 p.m.
