Wanikpun ’21 Makes Headlines in Freshman Campaign

Nalinda Wanikpun ’21, a freshman at New York University, was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week in women’s golf and took first place at the Jack Leaman Invitational last week.

Nalinda earned the league recognition after taking sixth place at the Vassar College Invitational on the weekend of April 16–17. She shot a seven-over-par 79 on Saturday and a five-over-par 77 on Sunday for an impressive 36-hole score of 156.

The next weekend, Nalinda shot just three over par on 36 holes to win the individual title at the Leaman Invitational in Amherst, Mass, helping her team to come from behind to beat Williams College and Amherst College.

The NYU team is ranked 12 in the nation, according to the most recent Women’s Golf Coaches Association poll, and with the victories over Williams and Amherst, teams that were ranked ahead of the Violets, along with the Liberty League Championship next weekend, the team could move up in the rankings.
