The boys varsity tennis team captured its first win of the season on Wednesday, May 1, defeating Pomfret in a close 4-3 match.
To start off the match, the Pelicans' No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams both win their matches and secured the all-important doubles point in the overall team match. Junior Mann Pandya and sophomore Julian Hernandez defeated their counterparts in the No. 2 match by a score of 8 to 6, and senior captain John O'Brien and senior Liam Scott won their match 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.
Loomis secured a quick second point with Pandya's decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 single spot. Scott followed suit at No. 5 singles, also winning in two sets (6-2, 6-2).
Pomfret responded with two wins of its own, though, bringing the overall match score to 3-2. With just one point left to decide the team match, Pelican freshman Gavin Anderson overcame a slow start and some nail-biting moments to defeat his opponent 6-3, 6-1, clinching the win for Loomis.
The boys dedicated their first win of the season to Coach Jed Stuart, who, along with his wife, faculty member Chelsea Stuart, welcomed their third child, Grady, into the world last weekend.
Up next, the Pelicans take on Suffield Academy in Suffield, Mass., for a 4:40 p.m. matchup against the Tigers on May 3.
