The third-seeded girls varsity basketball team defeated sixth-seeded Taft 62-48 on Wednesday, February 27, to advance to the Class A New England Prep School Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal.
The semifinal will take place on the Pelicans' home court at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2, where Loomis will take on Deerfield.
After Loomis earned a victory over Taft earlier in the season, the Rhinos were eager for a rematch and the chance to knock the Pelicans out of the championship mix. Their eagerness showed in the tenacity of their play in the opening minutes of the game.
The first half saw quick play from both teams, with most of the action coming from the paint and the three-point line. Up by only four points with a few seconds left in the first half, the Pelicans hit a big three-pointer to take a 26-19 lead heading into the locker room. In the second half, Loomis showed more energy and pushed the ball up the court at an impressive pace. The Pelicans' speed and quick transition game unsettled the Rhinos, and Loomis was able to pull ahead for the win.
Seventh-seeded Deerfield, the Pelicans' opponent in the semifinals, upset No. 2 Noble & Greenough to advance to the final four. When Loomis and Deerfield faced off earlier in the season, the Pelicans came out on top 63-43. The game will take place in Olcott Gymnasium and will be livestreamed on the Loomis Athletics webpage. The stream will begin five minutes before the start of the game.
The finals of the Class A tournament and all the other NEPSAC girls basketball championship tournaments will take place at Loomis on Sunday, March 3. Check the Loomis Athletics webpage this weekend for more information and the game schedule.
