The girls golf team opened its season with a 5-0 win over the Westminster School and a 3-2 victory over Greenwich Academy on Wednesday, April 10, at the Hopmeadow Country Club in Simsbury, Conn.
It was a cold and windy day, but the Pelicans persevered and defeated Westminster handily, making all the necessary on-course adjustments they had to in order to cruise to a victory.
The Greenwich match proved to be more challenging. Senior tri-captain Maddie Hong's strong performance (39) was spoiled by her opponent's chipping in for birdie on the final hole to win the match. Sophomore Nalinda Wanikpun also shot an impressive 39 and managed to defeat her opponent to tie the match at 1-1. Senior tri-captain Christiana Bevilacqua won her match at the No. 3 spot with a par on the final hole, and sophomore Joy Liu sealed the deal when she also recorded a par on the final hole to defeat her opponent, capturing the all-important third and final point in the match.
It was an excellent opening performance for the defending New England champions, who will return to action against a stellar Hotchkiss squad on Saturday, April 13, at Hotchkiss's home course.
