The girls varsity hockey team won two games in two days this weekend, defeating Milton Academy 4-3 in overtime and Berkshire School 4-0.
On Friday night, January 4, the team traveled to Milton and won an overtime thriller in the last minute of the game.
Sophomore Paige Larose opened the scoring early in the first period, and junior Jenna Donohue finished off a great passing play by junior Anna Hurd to give the Pelicans a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. Milton got on the board in the second period, but Hurd and Donohue connected again, this time with Hurd scoring the goal, to give the Pelicans a 3-1 lead.
In the third period Milton scored two goals in the last five minutes to tie the game and force it into overtime. In overtime senior Jess Schryver secured the win when she tucked the puck into the back of the net after a gritty effort.
Less than 24 hours later, the Pelicans hosted Berkshire at the Savage/Johnson Rink and shut out the Bears 4-0.
The Pelicans took a 1-0 lead in the first period when a hard-working shift from seniors Georgia Kraus and Maddie Hong and junior Chloe Behringer resulted in a goal for Schryver.
In the second period, Hurd struck twice on the power play, and junior Gisele Todd capped the scoring with a laser shot off of a great pass from freshman Zoe Pincelli. In the third period Berkshire generated some scoring chances, but sophomore goalie Grace Caligiuiri was up to the task, stopping every shot she faced. The shutout was the first of her career.
The Pelicans head into a stretch of Founders League games over the next two weeks and are looking to build off of the momentum from this weekend.
