The girls varsity tennis team defeated Suffield 7-0 on Wednesday, May 1, in the Pelicans' first away match of the season.
Despite having to play with new doubles partners and new singles positions due to a format change, the girls rose to the challenge and played their best tennis of the season, inspired by a dominant performance from the No. 1 doubles team.
Junior captain Bailey Prete and senior captain Sydney Anderson were a force to be reckoned with at the No. 1 spot, winning their doubles match 8-0 while holding their opponents to no more than two points each game.
At the No. 2 spot in doubles, senior captain Quincy Williams and sophomore Kendall Rice dismantled the attack of their opponents through decisive net play and won their match 8-0 as well. Seniors Ashley Edwards and Meghan Hasenbalg also looked impressive at the net as they won 8-2 in the No. 3 doubles match.
In singles play, the Pelicans were led by freshman Lena Sheng, who defeated her opponent 8-0 at the No. 1 spot, followed by two more 8-0 sweeps at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots from junior Anya Sastry and sophomore Kendall Rice, respectively. The match ended with an 8-4 victory at the No. 4 spot by sophomore Hannah Adler.
After dropping only six games in total during the match, the Pelicans (3-3) look to continue with this momentum as they travel to Choate for a match against the Wild Boars on Friday, May 3, at 4:40 p.m. and a match against Deerfield on Saturday, May 4, at 3 p.m.
