Junior Matt Farrell placed eighth in the Foot Locker Cross Country Northeast Championship on Saturday, November 24, earning a coveted spot at the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championship on December 8 in San Diego.
Finishing just behind Farrell at the regionals were familiar foes Mustafe Dahir from Choate in ninth place and Richard Sturtevandt of Northfield Mount Hermon in 10th. The top 10 finishers at each of the four regional championships move on to the nationals, so Farrell, Dahir, and Sturtevandt all will compete at nationals.
Farrell's time at the famed Van Cortlandt Park five-kilometer course in the Bronx was 15:38.70, one second out of third place in the closely contested race.
The last time a New England prep school boy competed in the Foot Locker nationals was in 2000, when Patrick Bensen of Deerfield Academy placed 31st overall.
Farrell has won three straight Founders League Cross Country Championships, as well as two consecutive New England Cross Country Championships. Last February, he also represented the United States at the North American Central American and Caribbean Cross-Country Championships, helping the United States finish second overall.
