With the first day of classes starting today, preseason for Loomis Chaffee student athletes has come to a close.
More than 150 athletes across nine different sports arrived on the Island before the start of the academic year in order to prepare for their upcoming seasons and attempt to make varsity rosters. Some of the students who arrived early were new to Loomis Chaffee, and preseason was a great way for these new students to get their feet under them and to meet faculty, staff, and students before the school year began.
Most teams had two to three practices a day along with weight-training sessions, but athletes and teams also took the time to bond and connect with one another off the field. The field hockey team enjoyed a team dinner at a student's home nearby, and the girls cross country runners enjoyed a camp fire and s'mores after one of their practices.
The football team played a successful scrimmage against Brunswick Academy on Saturday. Both sides took advantage of a great day of weather to compete and prepare their athletes for their first games of the season. The football team also hosted the NYC Lions, a youth football program from New York. The Lions players practiced on Pratt Field, toured campus, and enjoyed a meal in the dining hall.
The highlight of preseason however, was Loomis' inaugural Athlete Olympics. Each of the fall teams competed against one another in competitions that included relay races, musical chairs, and pie-eating/bubble gum-chewing contests. In the final standings, the boys soccer team came out on top and was named the winner of the event.
With preseason concluded and the school year kicking off, make sure to take a look at the Pelicans' athletics calendar and follow our teams throughout the season. The field hockey and football teams kick off the official season with games on Saturday, September 9.
