Dear Students, Parents, Faculty, and Staff,
Welcome to winter! We had about a foot of snow land on campus Wednesday night, and by Thursday afternoon, with the sun shining, we looked like a veritable winter wonderland. Head on over to Instagram to see lots of photographs of the snowy campus as well as various campus pups and children enjoying themselves. Unfortunately, while we had snow, we did not have a snow day! Just another disappointment of 2020. Maybe next year.
We are now at the end of the second week of Winter Term 1, and I hope you are all in the swing of things as you return to the courses you took Fall Term 1. I also hope that those students who were on campus during Fall Term 2 had a chance to meet their teachers for this term and that you are now more adjusted to this year's daily schedule. It's been tough—but with the approval of vaccines, we can at least begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
On the Island we continue to plan for the return of students in February. We are reexamining our testing protocols, quarantine requirements, and campus facilities to see what we need to change. A number of our peer schools that were planning on returning in January have now decided to stay online as Connecticut's numbers continue to rise. We will continue to assess the situation and will make a decision about February by the middle of January. In the meantime, continue to be careful—now is not the time to relax! Stay safe.
Make sure you check out this week's "In the Loop" for some cheesy Christmas movie recommendations as well as for a quick game of Among Us, "a multiplayer game of teamwork and betrayal." I am reliably told that about 90 percent of our students have played the game at least once and that perhaps as many as 50 percent of them play regularly—and that some faculty play, too! While it looks like fun, I think I will stick with The New York Times' Spelling Bee for now.
Happy Holidays! Sheila
