REMINDER Spring College Fair and Parking Instructions

The College Office will host the Spring College Fair on campus in Olcott on Tuesday, April 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (Please note: The fair begins 15 minutes before and ends 15 minutes after the community free for those juniors without classes in those time blocks.) Approximately 140 college representatives will be in attendance and will meet with our junior class.

Parking Instructions:

Faculty, staff, and students are asked NOT to park in the gravel lot near Clark or the Chaffee/Hubbard lot during the morning of Tuesday, April 18 to allow approximately 140 college reps to park. Please use the hockey rink or the hopyard parking from 8:00 a.m. to noon that day.

REMINDER Muslim Student Committee Open Meeting: Help Organize a Ramadan Celebration at Loomis

Interested in helping plan a Ramadan celebration at Loomis? If so, please join the Muslim Student Committee during the community free on Tuesday, April 18, in Founders 23, to help organize the first Ramadan celebration in Loomis history! Everyone is welcome to the meeting, and anyone interested in joining the Muslim Student Committee should attend.

Ramadan is an Islamic holy month observed by Muslims worldwide where Muslims undergo a period of daily fasting for a month. During the month, Muslims do not let food or drink pass their lips from dawn to dusk each day. As the holiest month of the year, Ramadan underpins some of the religion's core values, such as prayer, giving to charity, detachment from material pleasures, and self discipline. Please join us to learn more about Ramadan and to help organize for the predicted first day of Ramadan this year, May 28.

Volleyball Meeting April 20

Summit Test Prep

Summit Test Prep classes will continue on Wednesday, April 19, in Gilchrist Auditorium as well as the Clark Science Center classrooms. The SAT prep classes will take place in classrooms #114, #116 OR #118 from 1:30pm - 3:30pm. Please be on time. Questions or concerns should be addressed to Mrs. DeConinck.

NEW Reunion Warriors Needed

The Alumni Development Office is looking for enthusiastic and responsible student representatives of the school to work the largest alumni gathering of the year: Reunion Weekend on June 16 and 17. Interested applicants must return this application to Ms. Beres (third floor of Founders, Room 318) by Thursday, May 11 by 5:00 p.m. For those selected, there will be a mandatory meeting on Thursday, May 18 during the Community Free. Mailroom Relocation Soon!

The mailroom will be moving soon! All boarders are asked to check their boxes for mail - even if you think you don't have any - to help the transition go more smoothly.

UPS Shipping

The UPS Store has worked with LC for over 10 years, storing items for in-room delivery in September. For the class of 2017, they can ship to your college. Please see attached flyer for more information.

Book Drive

Our chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance is participating in Accio Books, an annual book drive hosted by the Harry Potter Alliance to promote literacy around the world. If you would like to donate books, there are boxes located in the library and the snug.
Accepted donations include:
• Children's and Young Adult books (including your books from English class as long as they are not too heavily annotated!)
Items that are NOT accepted include:
• Reference books
• Textbooks
• Workbooks
• Religious books
This year, the books are going to Words Alive, a nonprofit in San Diego that opens opportunities for success by inspiring in children a commitment to reading. Words Alive has three main programs for underserved communities in San Diego:
- In the Read Aloud Program, trained volunteers read aloud each week to 4,300 children from low-income communities.
- The Adolescent Book Group Program serves at-risk adolescents, many of whom have been sent to specialized community schools by the Juvenile Court system and have experienced extraordinary circumstances
- The Family Literacy Program has parents and children attend weekly workshops for seven weeks together to learn how to better engage with reading, empowering parents to be their child's first and most important teacher.

These programs serve over 5,000 children, teens, and families monthly.

Teacher Appreciation Video Contest

Teacher Appreciation week is the first week of May and Student Council wants YOU to submit a special video about a faculty or staff member you appreciate. The video can be any type of tribute to any faculty/staff member(s). Get creative and think outside the box! Submit the videos to Jacqueline Cleary by email by April 25. Contact Jacqueline Cleary for any questions.

Student Council Update

Student Council had another productive meeting where we mainly focused on legislation and on the advancement of our proposals. We voted to endorse Sarah's pass/fail option proposal for students in senior spring, and while this is a work in progress, the council decided to endorse her as she meets with the Academic office this Thursday. We would like to emphasize that this is not a finished product, and more changes may occur as the proposal continues to advance. Learn more about this proposal.

Another proposal underway is the Committee proposal, a proposal that would help committees help reach out to us, and benefit both of us as we work together on future ventures. Right now the proposal states that committees should come to council meetings bi-weekly, and that we would be setting goals for each committee to reach by certain timelines. We will be voting about this as a group sometime in the near future. Learn more about this proposal.

Earth Week Guest: Pete Dominick

On Tuesday April 25, Loomis is welcoming back Pete Dominick as our Earth Week guest. Pete is the host of a Sirius radio talk show called Stand Up! With Pete Dominick in which he interviews guests on a variety of topics and issues including the environment. In the spirit of his show, Pete's convocation will be run like his talk show where "callers" (Loomis students and faculty) ask questions and engage in a dialogue with him.

Pete is asking for "callers" (Loomis Chaffee students and faculty) to submit their questions or topics prior to his visit so we can line up the program. Please email Mr. Dyreson with your topic and/or question (the theme must be environmentally related but can included current events and news as well as the politics relating to environmental issues).

We would like to invite the "callers" to be present for the convocation and willing to go up on stage with Pete for a few minutes.

To learn more about Pete you can visit his website and feel free to ask Mr. Dyreson any questions. This should be an informative yet fun event in the spirit of Earth Week.

Submissions/requests to participate in this convocation are required by April 21.

Summer Work Program

If you are interested in working over the summer to get your commitment completed for the Community Work Program next year, the agriculture program needs you!  We are looking for able-bodied students to help out in our Loomis gardens for 8-day stints over the summer.  If interested or you want more information, please contact Mrs. Lee (gratia_lee@loomis.org) and Pete Gwyn (pete_gwyn@loomis.org).

AP EXAMS

AP Exams will be taking place on May 1-5 and May 8-12. The AP Exam ordering period is now closed. Thank you for attending Preadministration. If you still need to fill out your answer sheet and AP Pack please come to the college office ASAP. Questions or concerns should be addressed to Mrs. DeConinck, AP Coordinator. If you cancel your AP Exam for any reason, you will incur a $25 cancellation fee. Thank you.
