NEW  Daily Bulletin on Winter Break

This will be the last edition of the Daily Bulletin of 2018. We will resume on Wednesday, January 2, 2019. Enjoy your break!

Apply to be a World Bulletin Assistant Editor

Founded in 2010, the World Bulletin is Loomis' bi-annual global affairs journal, aiming to expose, enlighten, and educate our school community about the world beyond the Island. The World Bulletin takes pride in its variety of student writers, drawn from all four grades, and hailing from across the United States and around the world. Last published in Spring 2017, the World Bulletin was on hiatus last year, but we're eager to renew publication, with your help! The World Bulletin staff will publish one issue this spring, then expects to be back on full schedule in 2019-20.

If you are an avid writer and a conscious and curious global citizen, please apply for an editorial position. Experience writing for the World Bulletin is not necessary. Email Ethan Levinbook for application materials, and visit our page on the Loomis website to browse past issues. For those interested in contributing only, information will be released in the spring.

Winter Break Transportation

The link for transportation is now closed. Email Mrs. DeConinck if you need to reserve a spot.

Warm Hearts, Warm Heads, and Warm Hands Deadline Extended — Thursday, December 13

The winter hats and gloves collection for those in need in our area has been extended. Thank you to the many people who donated hats and gloves this afternoon. If you would still like to donate, please bring a new or gently used warm winter hat or pair of gloves (any size) to Mrs. Henderson's office in Chaffee 123. A collection box will be placed outside the office until Thursday afternoon, so anyone can drop off their contribution at their convenience. The donations will go to various organizations serving diverse populations in Greater Hartford including Beth Emmanuel Synagogue, Jewish Family Services, Christ the King Lutheran Church, Church Street Eats Soup Kitchen, and Immacare Shelter. When we all take care of each other, there is no room for hate. Please feel free to email Mrs. Henderson or Ms. Markman for more information.

The Loom: Stranger

The fall 2018 online edition of The Loom is now live! This fall, our publication focuses on the theme "Stranger." We hope that you enjoy the creative writing and artwork of our talented student contributors!

Schultz Fellows Application Deadline — January 3

Named after George P. Shultz, Secretary of State under President Reagan and a Loomis alumnus who visited campus last fall, the Shultz Fellowship is a think tank that actively encourages discussion across the political aisle regarding issues on campus, across the nation, and around the world. Each Thursday we host a meeting for members to come together to discuss current events. The group is currently comprised of seventeen politically diverse students spanning 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, but we are looking to add more members after winter break. Please follow this link to fill out an application by January 3. Contact Mike Francalangia, Carter Hutchinson, or Mr. LaForest for additional information.

Gilchrist Environmental Fellowship Program Application Deadline — January 5
The goal of the Gilchrist Environmental Fellowship program is to find and fund projects and people that will work towards sustainability by addressing the four pillars of environmental stewardship and discover new opportunities for education and action in the philosophy of environmental stewardship and sustainability.  Eligible participants include all members of the Loomis community (individual students, student groups, individual faculty, departments, and staff).

Make Your Money at the Grill Go Farther

The Norton Center is launching a new initiative called Charitable Blend. Beginning in January, we will display profiles of three nonprofit organizations at a table near the grill in the new Scanlan Campus Center. Each time someone makes a purchase of any kind at the grill, they can vote for one of the organizations using a wooden chip made by the Phi. The nonprofit with the most votes at term's end will receive a donation. We will then feature a different set of worthy nonprofits in the spring term.

If you would like to nominate a nonprofit for this program, please write a paragraph that explains your rationale and send it to Mr. LaForest by Friday, December 14. All faculty and students are invited to nominate a charity, even if they are not currently involved with community service, fundraising, or some other community engagement on or off campus.

Please contact Mr. LaForest with questions. 'Tis the season!

The Daily Bulletin is published via email every evening, except Saturdays, while school is in session. Check out the Bulletin for the latest announcements and information about upcoming events. Please use the Daily Bulletin Submission Form to submit announcements. The deadline is 3 p.m. the day of publication; submissions for Sunday's bulletin must be submitted by 3 p.m. on Friday.
