Welcome new Pelicans! We are so excited about your acceptance to Loomis and can't wait for you to join us on the Island! As day students at a boarding school, you are about to have a great adventure. At Loomis, you get all the benefits of a diverse and welcoming 24/7 community of students and faculty from around the world all while retaining an everyday connection to your families and local communities. With the exception of sleeping in the dorms (and there are even exceptions to that), we welcome and encourage you to take advantage of all Loomis has to offer both in and out of the classrooms. Whether you're excited about student government, the debate team, athletics, the arts, or any of our other activities, Loomis has something for everyone. And if you can't find an activity that interests you, go ahead and create it! You might be wondering what happens on campus on the weekends and whether you can be a part of it. Absolutely! Get ready for events like the Winterfest semi-formal dance, karaoke nights, movies on the quad, bubble soccer, and a whole host of other things that our students, faculty, and parents organize. I encourage you to take a look at the FAQs in this newsletter specifically created to address questions from day students and their families. I also hope to see you at an upcoming Revisit Day — a great way to preview life as a Loomis student. Go Pelicans!

Day Students: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the day student experience like at Loomis?
Day students are part of almost every aspect of life at Loomis. You can take advantage of all the resources and opportunities provided by the school while maintaining every day connections with your family and local communities.

How will I meet people?
During orientation in September, you will begin meeting your classmates. For the ninth-grade class, orientation continues throughout the fall with ropes course activities and throughout the year with peer counseling groups which are run by seniors. You will also get to know your classmates through your Common Good Seminar. Many activities are organized by class — hikes, dodgeball games, bowling, and so much more. Of course, you will also meet friends in classes, on sports teams, at meals, and in various other activities.

What does the typical day at Loomis look like?
Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. except on Thursdays when they start at 9 a.m. Each day you will have up to, but no more than, four classes depending on your particular schedule. On all days but Wednesdays, classes are 75 minutes long and there is free time, which we call Community Time or a GAP, built into the day. On Wednesdays, classes are 50 minutes long.

Classes end at 3:20 p.m. except on Wednesdays when they end at 12:20 p.m. After classes we have athletics (interscholastic and intramural), theater rehearsals, robotics, community service, and more. Depending on the activity you participate in, your day will usually end between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. Interscholastic athletic contests are typically scheduled on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.
