Conversation Credit Series #4: Being Muslim in the United States —October 21 All members of the community are invited to join our fourth "Conversation Credit" dialogue taking place in the Norton Center on Monday, October 21, during the Community Time. This conversation will focus on being Muslim in the United States. "Towel head." "Go back to your country." "Terrorist." "Camel jockey." "Oppressed." "You have been selected for special screening." These are all words that Muslims in the US have heard in the age of Islamophobia. Join Arabic teacher Ludmila Zamah as she talks about the history of Muslims in the US and what it is like to be American and Muslim in a time when those two identities are often seen as incompatible. We will discuss Hollywood's role in perpetuating stereotypes, Muslim responses (including political advocacy and comedy), and what we all can do to push back against Islamophobia. Please reach out to Ms. Zamah or Mr. LaForest with any questions. Naturalization Ceremony — Tuesday, October 22 The all-school convocation on Tuesday, October 22, will feature Judge Alfred Covello '50, who will convene his United States District Court in Olcott Gymnasium for a naturalization ceremony during which we will witness a group of approximately fifty new citizens take their Oath of Allegiance. A variety of Loomis Chaffee community members will participate in the ceremony, including the Chamber Singers. For more information on the process of naturalization, please visit this site.
To prepare for this special convocation, we challenge you to take a sample civics practice test. Any students who screenshot and email their results to Eric_LaForest@loomis.org will be entered into a raffle for a catered Chipotle meal for six.
Please note that the ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m. B5 will end at 9:35 a.m. and B6 will begin at 10:55 a.m. in order to accommodate the ceremony. Wireless Phone Chargers The IT department has seen an uptick recently on the number of ID badges that have lost their ability to scan. We believe that some of these failures may be due to wireless (inductive) chargers being used with your cell phones. Please make sure that if you are using a wireless charger that you are not letting your ID come into contact with your charger. If you are storing your ID in your phone case you should remove it before charging. Please note that inductive charging can also effect credit cards. All students are able to participate in an IEP and students currently on Financial Aid are eligible for IEP financial aid once during their time at Loomis.
October 9 EEE Update With the cooler weather this week, some community members are asking whether to still take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The answer is "yes." We have yet to experience the hard freeze that will end the mosquito season. Remember that Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a very rare disease that is caused by a virus spread by infected mosquitoes. This virus grows in birds that live in fresh-water swamps and is generally found only in these birds and in mosquitoes that usually do not bite people — disease transmission does not occur directly from person to person. To date, no mosquitoes have tested positive for EEE in Windsor. If you have any questions, please contact the Health Center at 860.687.6325.
Precautions you can take to avoid mosquito bites. — Use insect repellent (DEET). Repellent is available from the Health Center, athletic trainer's office, and Deans Office as well as in the dormitories. — Wear long sleeves, pants, and socks especially between dusk and dawn. — Report any damaged window screens to your dorm head or teacher. They will submit a work order for repair to the Physical Plant. — Avoid congregating near areas of standing water. — Minimize outdoor activity between dusk and dawn. We are asking students not to linger/congregate outside for extended periods of time after dinner and into the evening. 2020 Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair If you have done any extensive scientific and mathematical research and would like to present your work at the 2020 Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair, please email Mr. Osei-Mensah at Koby_Osei-Mensah@loomis.org as soon as possible, and no later than Tuesday, October 22.
