Dear Members of the Loomis Chaffee community,
This past weekend, Loomis students attending the Model UN Conference at Yale were sent home early, as were all conference attendees, due to a potential public health concern — a non-Loomis student from China exhibited flu-like symptoms and was diagnosed with influenza. It does not appear likely that the student's symptoms were related to coronavirus infection, but the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has asked that the student be tested for the coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Results are expected by the middle of the week.
I have consulted with local public health officials, and at this time there is no further intervention advised for the Model UN participants. Students who attended the Model UN are encouraged to communicate with Health Services if they develop fever, cough, other respiratory changes, or concerning symptoms. Given the fact that it is the height of cold and flu season, the most likely cause for these symptoms will be cold or flu. That has been the case for some students we know who have not felt well recently. We will continue to triage Loomis students as needed based on their symptoms and risk factors.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly.
Best,
Kendra Wiesel, RN, BSN, CNM Director of Health Services Gwendolen Sedgwick Batchelder Memorial Health Center The Loomis Chaffee School Windsor, CT 06095 860-687-6819 www.loomischaffee.org
