Monday Musings from The Kravis Center Monday Musings April 27, 2020 Focus: Reflecting, Collaborating, and Moving Forward Kravis center drop-in: Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00-3:00 https://zoom.us/j/4512570408
Dear Colleagues,
Overwhelmed, swamped, perplexed, ill-prepared, anxious, submerged, and buried. These are a few of the adjectives that I have used to describe my state of mind over the past two months. However, I am beginning to embrace a few more: excited, curious, innovative, and hopeful. As we move forward, the Kravis Center and the PHI are collaborating so that we can offer a space for both facilitation and design of pedagogical practices and innovative assessments.
On Thursday and Friday of this week, while our students are learning asynchronously, we will have the opportunity not only to reflect on the past six weeks but also to move forward, something that is much needed as we close out our first midterm of distance learning. I look forward to collaborating with, and learning from, my colleagues.
Among the topics that your department may discuss are the survey results and what they mean for your distance classroom, asynchronous teaching and learning, summative assessment design, and academic technology resources. Below are some of the resources that may be referenced and discussed:
Designing asynchronous classes :
Designing Formative Assessments (4 minutes - this video from Eric Hudson of Global Online Academy offers some great examples on asynchronous classes) How to build a great screencast video, Cult of Pedagogy (40 minutes - many important tips about creating an asynchronous class and about how to create an effective learning environment within an asynchronous class) Adding asynchronous discussions to your F2F classroom Edutopia (7 minutes - this article offers ways to hear more voices through asynchronous discussions)
Designing Summative assessments:
Performance-based assessments share the key characteristic of accurately measuring one or more specific course standards. They are also complex, authentic, process/product-oriented, open-ended, and time-bound, edutopia (7 minute read) Summative assessment strategy card, Eric Hudson GOA (4 minutes) What is a performance task - Part 1 with Jay McTighe (co-author of Understanding by Design - 10 minute read) Performance Task Resource Bank
Over the next few weeks and into the June PD days, the Monday Musings will continue to provide resources on the pedagogy, innovation and academic technology that you need as you move forward with distance learning. The Kravis Center will also continue to offer drop in sessions every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00-3:00 (https://zoom.us/j/4512570408 ). Alex, Matt, Rachel, and I look forward to working with you.
