Saturday, May 9 The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion invites you to this year's virtual Cultural Outburst! Journey with us to various locations and experiences from around the world. At Loomis Chaffee we have a richly diverse community, and with our students and faculties help we hope you will try new experiences as we encourage in all of us a desire to learn more about our students and faculty and their heritage.
A huge thank you for the hard work of faculty member Lilian Castillo de Hutchinson and junior Evan Petkis, and much appreciation to the hard work and submissions of organizations such as PRISM, Pan-Asian Student Alliance, International Student Ambassadors, the Alvord Center for Global and Environmental Studies, and LC Communications. Here is your passport to our world. Enjoy! Food, Music, and More!
Homemade Brazilian Brigadeiro I'm Isa, a sophomore from the city Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. In Brazil, we speak Portuguese, as most of you know, but it's important to remember. In this video, my sister, Babi, and I are making a traditional and easy recipe for a dessert called Brigadeiro. The songs in the background are some of my favorites, and I think that all of them represent a little bit of the energy of Brazilian people. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it! A Journey through Bogotá Hello, everyone! I am Elizabeth Parada and I am from Colombia, South America. Fun fact: Colombia, the country, is spelled with an "o", unlike the university of Columbia, spelled with a "u", and the frequency with which our country's name is misspelled is a pet peeve of most Colombians! Colombia is the northernmost country in South America and I grew up in its capital city, Bogotá. I am excited to share with you some special places in my city and also the surrounding areas in the regions of Cundinamarca and Boyacá, all of them in the high plains of the central Colombian Andes region. I hope you enjoy this virtual journey! The Falls of Pulapanzak Buen Dia everyone. Thank you so much for helping make this 2020 LC Cultural Outburst a Passport to the World a success. My name is Sra. Castillo de Hutchinson, or Hutch as most of you know me and I teach Spanish here on the island. I am from Honduras; a small country in Central America full of wonders, history and incredible people. Today my brother, Emilio, father Leonel and their friends will take you on a journey to the incredibly marvelous falls of Pulapanzak near Lake Yojoa. I hope you enjoy the scenery and that someday you will have the good fortune of visiting! Middle Eastern Recipes Hi everyone! This year juniors Elie Hannoush, Lilly Saunders, and Lily Bahrehmand along with Ms. Aweida-Parsons, created the Middle East Club. Passionate to share their cultures and backgrounds, the club hopes to spread positivity amidst all the stereotypes of the Middle East. They hope you enjoy these three recipes! A Look Inside Lagos, Nigeria Hi everyone! Biani and I decided to make a short video talking about some of our favorite foods, songs, and places to go to in Lagos, Nigeria. We both coincidentally live in Lagos, which is the commercial city of Nigeria (it's basically like the 'New York' of Nigeria). Although we live in the same state, we live in quite different parts of Lagos (think like living in Manhattan vs Brooklyn). However, the 'Lagos Vibe' is the same and we share similar opinions on things like food and music. Hope you enjoy this short video! Love, Mercy and Biani. Pan Asian Student Alliance The Pan-Asian Student Alliance aims to create a safe space for pan-Asian students, educate the Loomis Chaffee community about the pan-Asian experience, and address the issues affecting the pan-Asian community. The group would like to introduce themselves to you and fill you in on Asian/Pacific American Heritage month! A Tour of Taipei "I'm Ting-Yo Tan, I'm currently a sophomore at Loomis, and I live in Taipei, Taiwan. I want to show the world what Taiwan is doing right during these uncertain times, and what it currently looks like here in Taipei City. Schools, restaurants, stores, and offices are all open, but people are still staying cautious all the time. It is often the negligence at a particular moment that can lead to a devastating strike. We are always striving towards reaching that light at the end of the tunnel. " Photos of the Day
MLK Celebration MRev, led by senior Makayla McPherson, performed an inspiring and unifying piece during Loomis Chaffee's annual MLK Week celebration, honoring the legacy and continuing the social justice work of Dr. King.
Pelicans Engage Community from a Distance Language teacher Jackson Fleming on an Alvord Center International Education Program to Morocco: "There are certain aspects of culture and language that cannot be conveyed fully in a classroom or textbook--which need to be experienced in a fully immersed setting. The ability to support my students while they come to this realization themselves, has provided many of the fondest memories of my teaching career thus far."
Kavya Koli Teaches Self Defense in India Alvord Center Global & Environmental Studies Certificate senior Kavya Kolli spent a summer in India teaching self defense workshops as part of her Norton Fellowship: "I utilize my unique cultural heritage as a way to bridge the gap between people from different backgrounds and to find our similarities."
Caribbean Club Junior Schaefer Emmons, junior Maxwell Therrien, and sophomore Cole Alleyne promote their Caribbean Club as part of the campus wide club signup day in the fall. The club's mission is "to inform and education others, and to maintain a part of home when away from home."
Freya Rich Lives in Spain During Abroad Year Alvord Center Global & Environmental Studies Certificate Senior Freya Rich in Spain during her year with School Year Abroad: "I think fully immersing yourself in another culture is such an incredible, intimate way to get to know the people, language, and cadence of a place. For me, living with a host family and throwing myself into their way of life in Zaragoza opened my eyes to how another part of the world lives and broadened my perspective in ways I never imagined."
