Boys Varsity & JV Cross Country
With close to 50 runners and four coaches, the Loomis Chaffee boys cross country program welcomes veteran runners and rookies alike. Workouts find us in two groups on opposite sides of grassy running fields, in the pool for water drills, and in clusters of five and six taking on our choice of routes along the Connecticut River and into the river valley farmlands. All workouts find us celebrating a team spirit intensified by the camaraderie of the flocks of Pelican harriers.
Competing in tri-meets on Saturdays, the boys cross country team thrives on well-placed hard, medium, and easy workouts and even full recovery days between races. Among season highlights are the full-team participation event at the NMH Invitational, our dual meet with Trinity-Pawling, and the Founders League Championships.
Each season boasts both returning varsity runners and junior varsity harriers who look to welcome newcomers to the program, from post-graduate to freshman, all eager to do the Pelicans proud.

Andrew BartlettHead Coach
Andrew Bartlett, a math teacher on the Island, has been a competitive athlete for more than 40 years. In high school, he competed in middle distance and distance events, as well as the high jump and triple jump, seeing good results in those events in post-season competitions at the county and state levels in Connecticut. In college, he continued to hone his natural abilities, as evidenced by his participation in three national championships in cross country and track & field. In his post-collegiate career, he has primarily concentrated on the marathon distance, having completed more than 50 races at that distance.
At one point, his club team won the Boston Marathon, and he has been a top-100 finisher in that race himself and nearly qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials at that distance.
Throughout his time as an athlete, he has learned a tremendous amount about coaching, having helped the Loomis Chaffee cross country and track & field athletes earn All-Founders League and All-New England Prep School honors while also continuing to help his former athletes to adapt to the highly competitive nature of the collegiate level.
Coach Bartlett lives on campus with his wife and daughters.
