Independent Study

The Loomis Chaffee Math Department provides students approved for Independent Study with textbook information and a list of topics that they are expected to study for summer acceleration.

Students are required to document the hours they spend studying. For Geometry (a full course), students are required to spend at least 75 hours studying. For CL Calculus Topic A or C (half-courses), students are required to spend at least 40 hours studying. They must submit this documentation prior to being allowed to sit for a proficiency test.

Students are permitted, but not required, to take a non-LC course as part of their summer acceleration studies. Coursework counts toward the required hours. The LC math department does not officially recommend any course (aside from LC’s Accelerated Studies summer program). That is, the department does not guarantee that any non-LC course will adequately prepare students for the proficiency test. It is the student's responsibility to learn the material outlined in the provided list of topics, which may mean additional work on top of coursework.

Students must spend at least 6 of the required hours working with a subject-matter-expert. The subject-matter-expert must be an individual with a background in the subject that the student is studying (e.g., a tutor or instructor). A relative may also be an acceptable subject-matter-expert. Students must provide contact information for their subject-matter expert prior to approval for Independent Study. Prior to the student being allowed to sit for a proficiency test, the subject-matter expert must confirm that they have worked with the student for at least 6 hours.

Over the summer, an LC math department faculty member will serve as the Independent Study Coordinator. Students are required to submit documentation according to deadlines set by the coordinator and respond to communications in a timely manner.

Proficiency tests are proctored online in mid to late-August. The specific date is set by Independent Study Coordinator, and students must be available to take the test on the set date and time.
