Football Beats Avon Old Farms in Renewed Rivalry

In a game featuring two of the top ranked football teams in New England, the Pelicans defeated Avon Old Farms 35-26 on Saturday, October 2, on Pratt Field.

The game was the first matchup between these two teams since 2013, and there was plenty of hype and excitement around the game as Avon Old Farms showed up with two school buses full of student fans and the Loomis Chaffee and local community were out in force as well.

The large crowd seemed to motivate the Pelicans, and sophomore quarterback Dante Reno threw three touchdown passes in the first quarter. The first touchdown came on the opening drive when the Pelicans ran a play-action pass on fourth down. Reno found senior tight end Denzel Mountali wide open, and Mountali marched down the field to give the Pelicans a 7-0 lead after a successful point after attempt by senior kicker Zack Henderson.

On the next drive the Pelicans scored on another big play when Reno checked the ball down to junior running back David Egbe, who was able to avoid tackles and take the ball 40 yards to the endzone. The extra-point attempt from Henderson gave Loomis a 14-0 lead.

The third and final Loomis touchdown of the quarter came on a downfield pass from Reno to junior wideout Matt Brunelle, who blew by a defender to haul in the 75-yard reception. Avon put up 10 points before the end of the half with a touchdown and field goal, and the teams headed into their lockers room at halftime with the score 21-10 in favor of Loomis.

The third quarter was all Loomis as Egbe found the endzone two more times. Both touchdowns were two-yard runs behind the offensive line. The offensive linemen were later named the players of the game by head coach Jeff Moore.

Avon attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring two quick touchdowns, but the Pelican defense held strong. On the final drive of the game, junior cornerback Nathan Cobery picked off a pass in the end zone to seal the victory for Loomis, improving the team’s record to three wins and no losses. It is the first 3-0 start for the Pelicans since the 2014 season.

Up next, the Pelicans will take on Hotchkiss under the lights of Pratt Field at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 9. The Pelicans will be wearing their white uniforms as part of a school planned spirit day.
