Gomez, Morticia, and their whole lovable, ghoulish clan wrestle with the challenges of change in The Addams Family, a musical production to be presented in the Norris Ely Orchard Theater February 19–22.
Set in the family’s gothically sophisticated mansion, the Loomis Chaffee Theater & Dance Department production will feature the acting, voice, dance, and technical theater talents of a student cast and crew. The show’s familiar characters, which originated in single-panel cartoons by Charles Addams in the 1930s and gained later fame in television and feature films, will encounter new problems as the family’s teenage daughter, Wednesday (a Goth long before the look gained popularity), falls in love with a boy from town and invites his family over for dinner. The dinner party’s inevitable and hilarious clash of cultures, exacerbated by an epidemic of romantic and existential crises, leads to comical chaos.
Music and lyrics for The Addams Family were written by Andrew Lippa, who visited Loomis and worked with performing arts students several years ago. The book is by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. The show appeared on Broadway from March 2010 to December 2011, followed by national and international tours.
