Boys Lax Wins Back-to-Back Founders League Championships

Loomis Chaffee won the Founders League Championship for the second year in a row on Wednesday, May 21, with an 8-7 victory over Choate Rosemary Hall in a tight game on the Island.

After falling to Loomis last week on its home turf, Choate started strong, scoring the first two goals of the game. Loomis responded when senior Anthony Rodriguez found senior Rowyn Nurry, who scored from the crease with about two minutes left in the quarter.

Following a Choate violation on the faceoff, senior David Disque dodged a defender and scored with a low-to-high shot to tie the game. Senior Hayden Cody won the next faceoff and pushed the ball forward to junior Milki Conway-Reppert, who spun past his defender and fired another low-to-high shot into the net to give Loomis a 3–2 lead. Choate quickly answered with a transition goal off the following faceoff to even the score at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter featured back-and-forth play. Choate reclaimed the lead with a goal off a sweeping dodge, but Nurry drew his defender and fed cutting senior Cole Goodwillie, who tied the game at four with a smooth left-handed finish. Junior long-stick midfielder Mike Brennan caused a turnover on the defensive end, setting up Disque for his second goal and another Loomis lead. However, a failed clear allowed Choate to equalize at five heading into halftime.

Choate scored early in the third period to go up 6–5, but junior defender Saki Nicholas collected a rebound off a save from senior Liam O’Keefe and initiated a transition opportunity that led to a finish by freshman O.J. Ika. Disque followed with his third goal of the game — a deceptive underhand shot — to give Loomis a 7–6 lead heading into the fourth.

Both defenses tightened in the final quarter. With just over four minutes remaining, sophomore midfielder Noah Rodgers scored on the run, placing a shot in the corner to extend the Loomis lead to two. Choate responded with a man-up goal in the final 20 seconds, but Loomis secured the ensuing ground ball off the faceoff to close out the game.

O’Keefe, named the team’s defensive MVP, recorded eight saves in his final appearance for Loomis.

With the win, Loomis secured back-to-back Founders League Championships.
