Girls Track & Field Wins League Title

The girls track & field team won the Founders League Championship meet on Saturday, May 13, at home on the Wilde Track.

Reflecting the team’s depth, the Pelicans scored points in all 17 events, finishing first in eight of the events and breaking three school records along the way.

Loomis Chaffee accumulated 184.33 points to win the title. Hotchkiss was second with 129.33 points, and Taft placed third with 90.33 points, followed by Westminster, Choate, Kingswood-Oxford, Miss Porter’s, and Ethel Walker.

In the throwing events, freshman Lauren Plummer won both the shot put and the discus, setting a school record in the discus with a throw of 130 feet, 4 inches. Junior captain Sam Mancini bettered her own school record in the javelin and won the event with a throw of 123 feet-1 inch. Also scoring points (by placing in the top 6) in the throwing events were senior captain Jillian Rinaldi (second in the discus, fourth in the javelin, and fifth in the shot put).

Pelican jumpers also fared well, with junior Chloe Kahn placing second in the high jump, senior Nell Williams placing second in the pole vault, junior Chelsea Ndzana-Zogo placing third in the long jump, and junior Izzie Tarantino finishing tied for fourth place in the pole vault.

In the first running event of the day, the Pelicans’ 4x100-meter relay team of Ndzana-Zogo, sophomore Gabby Wood, senior captain Izzy Balise, and freshman Stella Purdy won the event and set a new school record with a time of 49.33.

The runners’ strong performances continued. Individual race winners included Ndzana-Zogo in the 100 meters, Mancini in the 100-meter hurdles, junior Logan Elie in the 800 meters, and sophomore Natalie Crocker in the 3000 meters. Also placing in running events were Balise (third in the 100), sophomore Ellen Chen (fifth in both the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles), Wood (fourth in the 200 meters), Mancini (second in the 200), Kahn (third in the 400 meters), sophomore Malie Alabre (sixth in the 400), Purdy (third in the 300 hurdles), senior Amelia Rinaldi (sixth in the 800), junior Sofia Rincon (second in the 1500 meters), sophomore Delaney Pece (third in the 1500), and junior Madison Bromberg (fifth in the 3000).

The meet concluded with the 4x400-meter relay, where the Loomis team of Kahn, Purdy, Balise, and Elie placed second with a strong time of 4:07.45.

The Pelicans conclude their season at the Division I New England Prep School Track Association Championships on Saturday, May 20.
