The girls varsity lacrosse team earned a 9–7 victory over Greenwich Academy on Saturday, May 3 — the Pelicans’ first win over the Gators since 2017.
Freshman Noella Yanni got the Pelicans on the board early with a free-position shot, but Loomis trailed 4–1 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second, seniors Gretchen Kawecki and Cata Tarantino connected to narrow the deficit, and a key save and clear by junior goalie Jordyn Hill-Bucktooth sparked a fast-break transition. Yanni assisted sophomore Juji Bang, who beat her defender and buried a shot. Just a minute later, Kawecki found Bang again cutting through the eight-meter for the equalizer. The score was tied at 4-4 at halftime.
Greenwich regained a two-goal lead early in the third quarter, but senior Syd Denson converted a free-position shot after a foul in the sphere, bringing Loomis back within one. The third quarter ended with the Pelicans trailing 7–6.
Momentum shifted quickly in the fourth. Off the draw, Denson fed Bang to tie the game, and on the next possession, Kawecki dished from behind the net to Denson, who dodged and finished low to give Loomis its first lead. Yanni sealed the win by scooping a ground ball and tossing it into Greenwich’s empty net with less than nine minutes remaining.
The defense, anchored by Hill’s interceptions and saves, held firm to close out the game.
Loomis will host Northfield Mt. Hermon on Wednesday, May 7, at 5 p.m., when the team will celebrate Senior Day.
