Jeff Dyreson, head volleyball coach at Loomis Chaffee since 2004, will be honored at the 26th Annual Induction Ceremony of the Connecticut Women’s Volleyball Hall of Fame on November 26, recognizing his significant contributions to the sport and his impact on players. According to the Connecticut Women’s Volleyball Hall of Fame, this induction celebrates his dedication, passion, and success in shaping the Loomis volleyball program into one of the most competitive programs in New England prep schools.
Jeff’s journey with volleyball began unexpectedly in high school. He was introduced to the game as a freshman when his basketball coach recommended volleyball for fall conditioning. What began as a way to stay fit soon turned into a passion as Jeff realized he was a stronger volleyball player than basketball player. By his senior year, Jeff had excelled as an outside hitter and setter, earning all-conference honors. He continued playing in college, joining the University of Wisconsin varsity men’s volleyball club, where he transitioned to the setter position. His skill and leadership earned him an All-Big Ten selection his senior year while contributing to a team that was nationally competitive.
During his senior year in college, Jeff took his first steps into coaching, returning to his alma mater, Madison West High School in Wisconsin, to coach the freshman boys team. His competitive drive began to shift from playing to coaching, and he spent time playing in adult leagues and tournaments while coaching boys club teams in Wisconsin.
In 1998, Jeff moved to Connecticut, where he continued to play in leagues and tournaments. In 2001, he was offered the assistant coach position for the girls varsity team at Loomis Chaffee. Jeff vividly remembers his first day of coaching, which fell on 9/11 — a memorable beginning to his Loomis coaching career. Three years later, in 2004, he took over as the head coach, and his impact on the program has been transformative.
Jeff’s leadership has brought consistent success to the Loomis volleyball team, which has earned nine Founders League titles, four appearances in the New England Tournament finals, and two New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) championships, including an undefeated season in 2023. In 2015, the team had its first 20-2 season and was seeded first in the NEPSAC Tournament for the first time in program history, advancing to the finals. The 2018 season saw the team capture its first New England Class A championship. So far this season, the team holds a 13-1 record, continuing the legacy of excellence Jeff has instilled.
