Leyden Reaches 200 Wins with Victory over Westminster

Girls ice hockey head coach Liz Leyden recorded her 200th career win on Monday, January 30, with a 3-0 victory over Westminster at the Savage/Johnson Rink.

It took just 13 seasons for Coach Leyden to reach the mark, averaging 15.4 wins a season.

With the team aware of what was on the line and with a surprise post-game celebration planned for Coach Leyden if they were victorious, the Pelicans started the game strong. They pushed the pace and, with their speed and relentless attack, put the Martlets on their heels.

Loomis Chaffee finally found the back of the net with just three seconds left in the first period when sophomore Ellie Lachance sent a puck toward the net and the shot was deflected off the skate of senior forward Cameron Devenney and into the goal.

LaChance also drew a penalty on the play, and the Pelicans headed into the locker room with a chance to score on the ensuing extra-man opportunity in the second period.

The Pelicans opened the second period with a deliberate plan and took their time getting to the right spots to set up a goal-scoring chance. With just over 30 seconds left on the powerplay, senior Maggie Johnson fired a puck toward the Westminster goal, and sophomore forward Grace Morin tipped home the shot to double the Pelicans’ lead.

Westminster responded with a big push of its own in the second period and the start of the third period, but junior goalie Leila Fournier turned back every chance Westminster created.

The Pelicans put icing on the cake late in the third period when they scored the final goal of the game on a five-on-three powerplay. Sophomore forward Chloe Obser won a faceoff back to Johnson, and Johnson made a perfect pass to sophomore Catie Collins, who rifled home a one-timer that beat the Westminster goaltender.

Up next, the Pelicans look to get number 201 for Coach Leyden when they take on the Frederick Gunn School on Wednesday, February 1, at 5 p.m. at the Savage/Johnson Rink.
