Girls Squash Wins New England Class D Championship

The Loomis Chaffee varsity girls squash team exceeded its ranking and won the New England Prep School Athletic Council Class D Tournament at Tabor Academy on February 28.

Loomis was seeded No. 3 in the tournament and opened play against No. 6 Suffield Academy. Senior captains Aditi Bhor (at No. 1 on the ladder) and Cookie Danchaivijitr (at No. 6) both earned 3–0 wins to put Loomis ahead early. Victories from senior Daphne Wong (No. 3), junior Phoebe Tobin (No. 4), freshman Minnie Vongvadhanaroj (No. 5), junior Maya Mattamana (No. 7), and senior Bridget Hamel (No. 8), secured a strong opening-round win and advanced to the semifinals.

The Pelicans faced second-seeded Concord Academy in the semifinals. Expecting a hard-fought match against the higher seed, Loomis started well with wins from Danchaivijitr, Tobin, and Mattamana. Concord responded with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, narrowing the score to 3–2 in Loomis’s favor. With the team needing one more point to clinch the match, Vongvadhanaroj played a composed and intelligent match at No. 5 to deliver the decisive fourth win. The match of the day came from Wong, who dropped the first game before rallying to earn an outstanding 3–1 victory against a strong opponent. Loomis secured a 5–2 upset of the No. 2 seed and advanced to the final.

Seventh-seeded Tabor Academy reached the championship match after defeating top-seeded Brooks School. The final also marked the last matches of the season for Loomis’ seniors. Aware of the pressure and intensity of the moment, the Pelicans focused on getting on the board early and did so with an impressive win from Tobin. Danchaivijitr followed with a commanding 3–0 victory, and Vongvadhanaroj added another key point. Hamel continued her strong tournament with a win at her position, giving Loomis a crucial edge.

At No. 2, junior Lisa Pang was locked in a high-quality battle, leveling the match at one game apiece before ultimately falling 1–3 despite pushing her opponent in both the third and fourth games. A similar result followed at No. 3, where Wong again showed resilience, evening the match at 1–1 before narrowly losing 1–3.

With the team score sitting at 3–2 and two matches remaining, the deciding point came from Mattamana at No. 7, who calmly handled the pressure and the home crowd to earn a 3–0 win and secure the team championship. In the final match at No. 1, Bhor competed hard against an outstanding opponent and lost, but knew her team had already clinched the title.

The championship marked a fitting conclusion to the Loomis squash careers of seniors Bhor, Danchaivijitr, Wong, Hamel, and Kayla Kim.
