Pelicans Earn First Win Over Deerfield Since 2010

The girls varsity tennis team earned a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Deerfield Academy on Monday, May 4, at the Shea Courts — the team’s first win against the Doors in 16 years.

The Pelicans showed impressive depth, particularly in doubles, where they won two of three matches to build early momentum.

At No. 2 doubles, junior Aim Wanglee and sophomore Katherine Welch secured a key 8-6 win while junior Yichen Liu and junior Ivy Van Blerkom added an 8-3 victory at No. 3. Freshmen Lea Cote and Hadley DeHoff competed well at No. 1 doubles but fell 8-4.

In singles, Wanglee dominated at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-0 win, and junior Elizabeth Mullany earned a solid 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 6. Deerfield responded with wins at No. 1, No. 4, and a tight three-set match at No. 5, where Deerfield’s player edged Liu 10-8 in a third-set tiebreak.

With the match tied 4-4, Van Blerkom delivered a clutch performance at No. 3 singles, winning a decisive third-set tiebreak 10-7 to clinch an exciting home victory for Loomis.
