Spring 2024 Season Roundup

Another great spring season is in the books for the Loomis Chaffee Pelicans, including standout post-season performances by several teams. 

The girls track & field team won the Division 1 New England prep school title on Saturday, May 18, accumulating an impressive 137.5 points at the championship meet, 64.5 more points than second-place Phillips Exeter. The Pelicans also broke multiple records on the day. The team finished the season undefeated and as Founders League and New England champions.

The boys track & field team also had an extremely strong finish to the season, placing second at Saturday’s Division 1 New England championship meet. The only team that outscored the Pelicans was track & field powerhouse Phillips Exeter. Highlights for the Pelicans from this meet included senior captain Sebastian Cohen’s winning both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and senior captain Orion Browne’s winning the triple jump. The team finished the spring with an undefeated regular-season record, a Founders League Championship, and the second-place plaque from New England’s. 

The boys lacrosse team won its first Founders League title since 2008 with a decisive 14-7 road win over Taft in the championship game on Wednesday, May 22. The boys ended the season with a 16-2 record, a historic season for the Pelicans. 

The softball team placed second in the Western New England League tournament last weekend, May 18–19. The team defeated St. Luke’s 6-5 in the semifinals and then fell to an extremely strong Kingswood Oxford team in the finals after an amazing Loomis comeback fell just two runs short. The Pelicans finished the season with a record of 13-3 and have a bright future ahead of them with their young team. 

The girls water polo team ended the season with a third-place finish at the New England Prep School Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday, May 18. The team lost 9-5 to the eventual tournament champion, Williston, in the semifinals and played to a decisive win over Deerfield in the third-place game. The team finished the season with a 10-5 record, a great year for the team.

The girls lacrosse team placed third in the Founders League tournament after falling to Taft 14-11 on the road in a hard-fought semifinal contest on Saturday, May 18. The Pelicans finished the year with an 8-8 record, which included big wins over Williston Northampton, Choate, and others.

The boys golf team found a lot of success this season, finishing with a head-to-head record of 15-4, which included a 9-0 start. The team also placed third in the Founders League on Saturday, May 18 and third in the Kingswood Oxford tournament on Wednesday, May 22 to conclude the season.

The girls golf team also had a strong head-to-head record this season of 16-3, while starting the year off with nine consecutive victories. To end the year, the team placed third in the Founders League Tournament at Hotchkiss on Saturday, May 18. 

The boys varsity tennis team finished the season at 10-5, including big wins over Taft and Choate. The team also placed third in the Southern New England Tennis League tournament at Taft near the end of the season on Saturday, May 11. 

The girls varsity tennis team had a hot start to its spring season, winning its first three matches. The team finished the season at 5-5 with the last match being a decisive 7-1 win over Westminster on Saturday, May 18.
