Two Loomis Chaffee Alumni Drafted into the Canadian Football League

Two former Loomis Chaffee football standouts — Paris Shand ’20 and Nate Martey ’21 — have been selected in the 2025 Canadian Football League (CFL) draft.

Shand, a native of Toronto, Ontario, was selected in the second round (19th overall) by the Toronto Argonauts. A four-sport athlete who didn’t begin playing tackle football until his junior year, Shand quickly emerged as a dominant defensive lineman at Loomis Chaffee and earned a top-15 state ranking in Connecticut’s Class of 2020.

Following his year at Loomis, Shand played three seasons at the University of Arizona before transferring to Louisiana State University for his senior year in 2023. Over 49 collegiate games, he tallied 82 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and nine sacks.

In addition to his CFL selection, Shand signed an undrafted free agent contract with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.

Martey was selected in the eighth round of the CFL draft (66th overall) by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He was a three-year member of the Loomis football team, captaining the team his senior year. He earned First-Team All-New England, All-Central New England, and Team Defensive Player of the Year.

Martey, from Ottawa, Ontario, began his collegiate career at Princeton University, where he appeared in all 10 games during the 2022 season, recording 25 tackles, including 4.5 for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

In 2023, Martey transferred to Arkansas State University, where he made an immediate impact on the Red Wolves’ defensive line. He played in all 13 games, starting 10 at defensive tackle, and recorded 37 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, and 6.0 sacks. His performance earned him a ranking of 17th among Sun Belt Conference defensive tackles by Pro Football Focus, with a defensive grade of 61.2.

Martey’s collegiate career totals included 97 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, one fumble recovery, and one pass knockdown over 37 games.
