Abdoulaye Sow

“Loomis has 100 percent helped me grow as a person. Everyone on this campus wants to see my growth, and I would not want to be anywhere else.”

We recently caught up with junior Abdoulaye Sow, who said as a freshman he was “curious, unorganized, and excited, very excited.” When asked to describe himself now, he laughs and says,  “Curious, organized, and excited.” Given all that he participates in on campus, that organization is essential.

Year: Junior

Hometown: Bronx, N.Y.

Activities: Varsity football, track & field, prefect in Carter Hall, co-leader of Muslim Student Union, StuActs, Brothers in Unity, PRISM

What has made you want to be involved in so many ways? “Honestly, I love giving back.” A big part of that comes from his freshman year. He said he knew no one in the dorm, but his prefect invited him and a few others up to his room on a weekend to watch Ultimate Fighting Championship. “It was one of the best rooms I’ve ever seen — lights everywhere, posters, a nice monitor. I now have a TV in my room, which is set up sort of like his. I just want to give back how he gave back to me, being a vessel for the new students.”

Favorite snack: “That’s hard. That's really hard. It’s between animal crackers and GoGo Squeez applesauce. Can never go wrong with either of them.”

Favorite meal: “It has to be my aunt’s famous baked mac and cheese [at Thanksgiving].” What makes it famous? “I think it’s all the different cheeses she uses. It’s just perfect. The crust, everything. It’s creamy. I’m craving it now.”

Are you a dog or cat person and why? “Recently my brother got a cat, and the first three minutes I was terrified, but now I am obsessed with the cat, a Maine coon that turned 1 this summer. But I will stick with dogs.”  He has none now but says, “I need a golden retriever and a German shepherd as soon as college ends.”

Favorite place on campus and why? “The football turf.” He spends a lot of time there in the fall for football and in the spring for track & field. “I think that would be my safe place on campus.”

What is it about football that you enjoy? “The team aspect. I think it is the best team sport in the world. If one person doesn’t do their job, it impacts the game 100 percent. If everyone does their job, we thrive as a team. I like the team aspect of everything, the coaches, the players. We all have a connection that I really love.” And what about track and field? “It’s more individual, but the coaches and my teammates, we all want to see each other succeed.” He throws the shot put, discus, and javelin.

If you had one wish for yourself, what would it be? Make my parents proud. And one wish for the world? “Stop global warming immediately.”

If you could live 100 years in the past or 100 years in the future, what would you choose? “I’m not sure I could adapt to the past the way I could to the future. I think I’d be all right in the future. Maybe.”

What impact has Loomis had on you? “Loomis has 100 percent helped me grow as a person.” He says he is more organized, learned time management, and tries to be there for others. And then he mentions many faculty members and coaches that have been there for him. “Everyone on this campus wants to see my growth, and I would not want to be anywhere else.”
