Charlotte Preuss
“[Student Council] has been a place where I have learned to be a leader on campus, so to be able to lead this group is really exciting.”
We recently caught up with rising senior Charlotte Preuss, who will have a big role in the 2025–26 school year, president of the Student Council.
She recently was elected in a vote of all Student Council members. Each person seeking the top spot gave a 10-minute speech, fielded questions for 10 minutes, and had a “character witness” talk about them for five minutes.
“This council is so important to me,” Charlotte said. “[Student Council] has been a place where I have learned to be a leader on campus, so to be able to lead this group is really exciting.”
Charlotte said she wants to continue to raise the visibility of STUCO, making sure students are aware of what the council is doing. She said she also looks forward to helping to guide the various task groups to keep them running smoothly and productively. She complimented outgoing Student Council President Sara Feged, who graduated May 25. “I always looked up to Sara as a leader, a friend, and I want to be that for the other people on the council,” Charlotte said.
Hometown: Avon, Conn.
Year: Junior
Clubs/activities: Elected Student Council president for 2025–26 school year; has been on the council since she was a sophomore ... Cross country and track & field. ... Head environmental proctor ... Day for Girls Club president ... tour guide.
On her interest in the environment: “I feel we talk about the existential threat of climate change and we learn a lot about that, but before coming here I didn't have the opportunity to do anything about it, so I do love how Loomis has allowed me to get involved.” Besides being a head e-proctor, she writes for E-Mag, the school’s environmental magazine.
On someone who has influenced her: “In terms of shaping my Loomis career, it would be my sister [Sofia ’23]. We're day students, so all those car rides to school made a big difference, and she was the person who pushed me to do more, like STUCO and e-proctor, and to seek leadership positions.” Sofia attends Amherst College.
Favorite home-cooked meal: “My mom makes really good enchiladas.”
Favorite snack: Goldfish.
What do you enjoy about cross country and track? “The teams. They are invaluable. We’re going through pain together. ... There is something about pushing yourself with your teammates, doing a hard workout and getting through it with friends.”
If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and why? Her best friend from Avon growing up. “She moved to Montana, and I have not seen her in a while.”
If someone asked you to describe yourself, what would you say? “I’m hard-working, in that I am stubborn. If I commit to something, I am going to do it. I am going to give it 100 percent.”
Would you rather live 100 years in the past or future? “That’s a tough one. I don’t know that either are great. I’m not sure what the climate will look like in the future, and not sure living in the past was great. I don’t know that I could choose.” Maybe it’s better to live in the present? She laughed. “I think it definitely is.”
What is something people might not know about you? She is a whiz at the game “Bop It,” winning at all levels.
What’s your ideal day off from school? Running in the morning and then reading. “A simple, calm day” since the school year is busy. “I read a lot of books.” She tends toward young adult science fiction/fantasy.
