Jack Daly

“Being here four years and seeing [previous captains] helped me take from them the qualities of leading by example, staying consistent, being fair.”

We recently caught up with senior Jack Daly, a captain of the hockey team, on a game day. He was wearing a jacket and tie. “I love it,” he said of dressing up. “It kind of brings you back to what Loomis was years ago, and it gets you ready for game day. It doesn't hurt to look nice, too.”

He has been on skates since he could walk and since coming here has aspired to be a hockey captain. He said he saw others in that role and they inspired him. “I wanted to be that person for someone else in the future,” Jack said.

The role of captain means multiple things. “Being here four years and seeing [previous captains] helped me take from them the qualities of leading by example, staying consistent, being fair,” Jack said.

He plays defense. When asked what he enjoys about the position, he said, “This might sound mean, but not letting kids score, ending their fun.”

Jack has been on skates since he could walk. Since coming to Loomis, he has aspired to be a hockey captain — an achievement realized this season.

Project/assignment you particularly enjoyed: “I’d say the College-Level U.S. History paper. I’d never written anything that long before, and it was a little overwhelming at first, but I was proud of the end product.” Jack said he wanted to do his research paper on something local, so he wrote on the use of Indigenous land for casinos in Connecticut: Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard and Mohegan Sun in Uncasville. They are operated on tribal lands by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and the Mohegan Tribe, respectively.

Favorite food: He said he enjoys the chicken parm grinders the team has on the way back from road games but topping the list: his mother’s homemade chicken pot pie.

Favorite place on campus: “The dining hall, and not just eating a ton of food but hanging out and talking with friends. It is just a good spot to get to know people better.”

If a robot could do any chore for you, what would it be? “Fold and put away laundry/keep my room organized. I procrastinate putting away the laundry.”

On being a head tour guide: “I love it. Just meeting all the new families. I have multiple teammates I've [led on tours]. I look back on how they were kind of nervous being on campus, and I really wanted to impress them with the campus. And now we’re best friends hanging out. And even those who I may not became best friends with, it is great to represent Loomis in the best way. I like to keep the tours personal as well, telling them what it is like being a student here.” He said Loomis Chaffee has been a great school for him for the balance of academics and athletics. And, he said, “even though Loomis Chaffee is a big school [about 750 students], we have a small community feel.”

What people might not know about you: “I like to travel, and last summer our family went to Hawaii. That was amazing, and I was really happy we could do that as a family, sort of a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
