Numbers Can’t Define Him

Lacrosse has been a big part of Milki Conway-Reppert’s life since he was 8 years old, and it will remain that way. He will play for Dartmouth College next year. But when he sustained a season-ending injury during his sophomore year at Loomis Chaffee, lacrosse could not be an outlet for him in the same way.

“The injury helped me understand why I loved Loomis,” he says. “I became more involved in the community. When you’re at a place like Loomis, there are so many special people, and you’re wasting your time if you are not branching out and meeting those people. The injury helped me understand how special Loomis is.” 

Milki played attack on the lacrosse field for the Pelicans. “I’m more of a facilitator than a scorer,” he says. “I love to have the ball on my stick and to be able to manipulate the defense.” Being a facilitator seemed to carry over to other parts of his campus life, be it in the classroom or the dorm.

Milki was a tour guide for three years, and a resident assistant as a senior in Batchelder Hall. Teachers spoke of his collaborative nature and support of his classmates. His college advisor called him “reflective, thoughtful, and kind.”

Sophomore year also was a time when Milki says he learned how much “the little things matter.”

“Dean [Jess] Matzkin came up to me, and she said, ‘A lot of people have told me you’re so kind to people on campus, always saying hi to people, helping people,’” Milki says. “I had never thought about it, but the fact a dean came up to me and said people were saying that about me made me realize how those little things affect people’s lives.”

When Milki got back on the field as a junior, he helped lead the Pelicans to their second straight Founders League title. They won a third in his senior year. 

“Milki was an incredible leader over his four years with us,” boys lacrosse head coach Bill Ball says. “As a senior captain, he helped motivate our team each day. His freshman year was maybe one of the best freshman campaigns by a Loomis lacrosse player ever, as he finished with 30 goals and 34 assists. He was our leading scorer that year. However, I don’t think Milki’s impact on the program can be defined by stats. His work ethic and full commitment to helping Loomis Chaffee lacrosse reach a different level of success seemed to always be at the top of his mind. He only worried about team achievements, never about his own stats.” 

Milki challenged himself in the classroom, too, opting to take many College-Level and advanced courses. When asked what people might be surprised to hear about him, he says, “How much I enjoyed school.” When asked about his proudest moment, he talks about earning departmental honors. 

“I think his ability to be seen as more than a lacrosse player on campus has paved the way for others like him to have multifaceted roles on campus,” Coach Ball says. “He’s a great ambassador for the sport in general, but certainly for Loomis Chaffee.”

What will we be saying about artificial intelligence in 10 years? “We will understand that AI can help us, but we can’t allow it to take over our creativity, which I feel it can’t replicate ... but it will be involved in many aspects of our life in 10 years.”

If Loomis Chaffee came with a set of instructions, what would they be? Get to know as many people as possible. Challenge yourself. “This is a place where you can push yourself to the next level.” Take care of each other. “People love being around each other, helping each other.”
