Wyeth Andrews
“I enjoy capturing a memory, and with drone shots it is interesting because it is a unique view of the world you wouldn’t get to see otherwise.”
We recently caught up with junior Wyeth Andrews. The Daily Bulletin, which has the latest announcements and information about upcoming events, also contains a photo submitted by a member of the Loomis Chaffee community. Wyeth is a regular contributor. He is new to photography. Last summer he was given a photography drone for his birthday and started using it in August. For the past four or five months, he said, he also has been using cameras. “Both my parents are into photography, so we have some good cameras, and I have learned how to use those.” Wyatt says he enjoys “capturing a memory, and with drone shots it is interesting because it is a unique view of the world you wouldn’t get to see otherwise.”
Year: Junior
Hometown: Simsbury, Conn.
Clubs/activities: Water polo in the fall, swimming in the winter, track & field in the spring. A member of the Pancake Society, StuActs, and the Photography Club. On the financial literacy leadership team. Quantitative Resource and Science Center tutor.
On swimming: He started swimming the summer after third grade, and he joined the LC team as a freshman and the water polo team as a sophomore. He swims mostly sprint races, the 50 and 100 freestyle. “I love racing and the feel of the water and just being in the pool.”
A course or homework assignment that sticks out: As a sophomore Wyatt took Intro to Computer Science: Programming and then College-Level Computer Science. “At the end of the year we had to make our own game; I really enjoyed that project.”
Favorite place on campus: “The cupola [on top of Founders Hall] I find really interesting. Last year I worked Reunion [Weekend] and got to go up into the cupola with alumni. It's just a cool place with a great view of campus.”
A favorite photo you’ve taken on campus: One of my favorites was during the fall. I took a photo of the train at sunset [with the drone]. That was one of my first photos in the Daily Bulletin. It was a really nice time of day.”

Favorite meal: “Homemade pizza. My dad likes to make pizza.” Toppings? “Depends on the day. Sometimes just cheese, sometimes pepperoni or sausage.”
Describe an ideal day off from school? “I’d probably start by sleeping in; especially as a day student, I don’t really get to do that. If it's the summer, I’d go to the pool for some swimming. Probably go for a walk, take some pictures. And relax."
If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and why? Vincent Laforet, a fine arts and commercial photographer who specializes in aerial photography. His collections on his website include major cities, water, earth, life in general, all from above. “I have his book of aerial photography. He also does a lot of tilt-shift photography, which is one thing that got me into photography.” Tilt-shift photography can be used to make a subject look miniature but also to create perfect panoramas, maximize depth of field, and get perspective control (making crooked buildings look straight), according to the website, thephotoargus.com.
What’s something people might not know about you? “We have a pond in my yard at home. One thing I used to do as a kid is catch frogs.” That sounds like a dream spot for many kids.
Would you rather live 100 years in the past or future? The future. “In the past century we have made so many technological advances for quality of life, health, that living 100 years in the past would be so much worse. And I’m sure there will be a lot of cool things in the future.”
