An Engaged Community

The Community Engagement program recently finished its first full year of offering CPR certification classes, certifying 30 students in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic first aid. The initiative was led by junior Audrina Wong, junior Aahna Shah, and Carolyn Jarvis ‘06, the director of Health Center operations.

The Pelican Service Organization (PSO) also had a busy May:

On May 8, the PSO, led by freshman Seth Kalansuriya, hosted its first Spike Ball Tournament and raised more than $400 for the Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter.

On May 11, the PSO sponsored an event in which Josh Kornberg, vice president for advancement at The Greater Hartford Gives Foundation, talked about community foundations, the Greater Hartford community, and philanthropy.

On May 15, the Lemon Club, led by junior Audrey Flynn, raised more than $2,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a nationwide childhood cancer charity.

The MS Walk raised money and awareness for the cause.

PSO participated in the annual MS Walk on May 16, raising more than $4,400 through online and on-campus fundraising. This effort was led by junior Lily Glasser, the PSO social media & public relations officer.

The PSO also is conducting a backpack collection, running through Friday, May 29. The backpacks will be going to Sewa Bharthi School in India to aid students who don’t have access to such materials.
