Maurice Moore, a visual artist, writer, and performer, is working with and alongside Loomis Chaffee students and faculty for the next 10 days in the Richmond Art Center. 

The visiting artist’s time on campus coincides with “Drawing Wit Light,” an exhibition of their work, in the Sue and Eugene Mercy Jr. Gallery September 20–October 25.  

Moore is a doctoral performance studies candidate at the University of California-Davis, and their work has appeared in the publications Communication and Critical/ Cultural Studies, Decoded Pride, Confluence, and Mollyhouse. In addition, they have exhibited at the Centre for Recent Drawing (C4RD) in London; Verge Center for the Arts in Sacramento, Calif.; and the Calabar Gallery in New York City, among other venues.  

Moore will meet with an audience of students in an extended artist talk where they will speak about their art and answer questions on Monday, September 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Gilchrist Auditorium. The presentation is sponsored by the Center for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and the Norton Family Center for the Common Good.  

Two exhibitions of work by school community members will run concurrently with “Drawing Wit Light.” The Emerging Artists Exhibit, presenting students’ summer work, and the Community Art Show, exhibiting work by faculty and staff, will be on display in the Barnes and Wilde galleries. 

An opening reception for all three exhibits will take place on Tuesday, September 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Richmond Art Center.

The Mercy Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Please remember that gallery hours are subject to the school schedule. The public is welcome at the gallery but must follow Loomis Chaffee’s visitor rules posted on the COVID-19 page of the school’s website.
