Robotics Teams Qualify for State Competition

Both of the Loomis Chaffee FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics teams will compete in the state competition on February 22.

Ross’ Universal Robots, known as RUR (FTC Team 14345), won a competition in Vernon, Conn., on January 25. After finishing fourth in the qualifying rounds, RUR won the semifinal and final match, earning a berth in the state competition. RUR also won the Think Award, the second-highest award. Captains of the team are senior Saul Lawrence, and sophomores Aniyah Stewart Green and Dylan Forman.

The Think Award is described by FIRST as a judged award “given to the team that best reflects the journey the team took as they experienced the engineering design process during the build season. ... The team’s engineering content must focus on the design and build stage of the team’s robot.”

HAX (FTC Team 40) won the top award, the Inspire Award, for the second time in program history. The last time a Loomis team won the award, the current seniors on the team were freshmen. HAX also qualified for the state competition. Captains of the team are seniors Hannah Smith and Oat Twinvitoo and junior Emma Chu.

“We tried a lot of new things this year, and it is nice to see the benefits and rewards,” Emma said.

The Inspire Award is described by FIRST as a judged award “given to the team that best embodies the ‘challenge’ of the FIRST Tech Challenge program. The team that receives this award is a strong ambassador for FIRST programs and a role model FIRST team.”

Both teams compete again on Saturday, February 1, at Windsor CREC Academy of Aerospace and Engineering.
