'Tis The Season: Holiday Service Festival December 9

The Loomis Chaffee list might not be as long as Santa’s, but it takes plenty of hands to pull it off. It seems there are plenty of elves running around campus ready to brighten the holidays for people near and far.

The Pelican Service Organization’s (PSO) second annual Holiday Service Festival is on the evening of Friday, December 9, in the dining hall and will feature several activities organized by various service groups.

“The Holiday Service Festival is an effort to bring together all Community Engagement groups on campus,” said senior Will Howley, the PSO president. “PSO is the main, overarching group, but there are several smaller ones, and each will have its own activity. This doubles as a fun student activity on a Friday night and a fund-raising event.”

Students did some final planning Thursday morning in the Community Engagement room.

“I think it’s important for everyone in our community to see the bigger community outside our school and make an impact on it,” sophomore Molly Bernardi said. “I think doing things like this and helping local groups allows us to fulfill our mission statement as a school and take that to the real world.”

Activities at the PSO’s second annual Holiday Service Festival:

  • PSO members will be decorating gingerbread houses that will go to the local senior center and residences.
  • Members of the SPARKS club will be making snow globes for Windsor students and raising money for the Malala Fund.
  • The Days for Girls Club will be raising money for the international Days for Girls organization.
  • The Connecticut Children’s Club, which supports Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, will be making holiday cards for children in the hospital during the holidays.
  • The Veteran’s Club will be offering students the chance to make ornaments and raise money for Purple Heart Homes.
  • PSO and the South Asian Society are hosting a dodge ball event to raise money for water insecurity.
  • Environmental proctors are offering students the chance to make decorations out of natural and repurposed items.
  • The Project Santa gift drop will take place. Several groups and dorms on campus are sponsoring Windsor families and will be dropping off their gifts Friday night at the PSO festival.

The school also is sending cards made by students in Community Engagement to Windsor’s Weekend Wheels Program, which sends food home with school children for the weekend.

The LC Parents Association filled stockings this week for Project Santa, which provides gifts, food, and other holiday items to families in need in town.

Also, several groups and departments on campus are sponsoring Windsor residents in need through the local Social Services agency and will be dropping off their gifts on Wednesday, December 14, at the Community Engagement room.
