Information for Day Families

Students have an incredible web of support at Loomis. All students have a dean and an advisor and develop relationships with the faculty who teach and coach them, advise clubs and activities, and interact with them in any number of ways. Student leaders are trained to support students and be an additional resource. They work closely with our Counseling Department to be a liaison if additional help is needed. Our goal is to make sure that there are many times each day when students connect with an adult or student leader at Loomis. As parents, you will also connect with certain adults, and if you feel that you need to speak with someone, there are a number of people to choose from — advisors can often speak to academic and social needs and concerns, and deans can help with general issues. If in doubt, start with your child's advisor and they will work to find the answer to your question.

During a designated period in the fall term, day students may apply to be honorary residents of one dorm to have visitation privileges similar to residents of that dorm. The Student Life Office oversees this process and grant these permissions. As honorary residents, day students are expected to follow the guidelines and expectations set forth by the dorm head and adhere to the same policy as boarding students for visitation of all other dorms.

Honorary Residency Guidelines

All current parents are members of the Loomis Chaffee Parents Association (LCPA) and are invited to LCPA meetings to hear from the head of school and other invited faculty. Most of those meetings are held over Zoom, making it easy for all parents to participate. The LCPA hosts an online book club for parents and plans several faculty/staff appreciation events and the popular Winterfest semi-formal for students. Day parents often sponsor team dinners, host boarding students during school breaks, and support various activities on campus. The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations also hosts regional receptions throughout the year, and all parents receive the weekly Parent eNews with news just for parents and Pelican Pride, a weekly news digest that celebrates the accomplishments of Loomis Chaffee students, faculty, and alumni.

Loomis does not provide daily transportation to or from school for day students. The online school directory, which is available starting in late August on the Veracross portal, does allow families to search for other day families living near them. This tool is helpful for families that would like to arrange carpools or van services. Families also make connections during the LCPA’s new family receptions in the local area.

If your child is leaving campus before their day’s obligations are completed, they should check out through the Health Center. If they are leaving campus but then returning later in the day, they should check back in with the Health Center. They should also communicate this information with the Office of Student Life.

In the event of a cancellation or delay to the start of the school day, Loomis’ automated notification system will begin — usually by 6 a.m. — sending text and/or email messages to all students, faculty, staff, and all parents of day students. In the event of an early dismissal, our automated system will email and/or text students and parents of day students. 

There will be times when the decision to close or delay is not clear cut. We will do our best to make a reasonable decision. If classes and activities are proceeding as usual, and you do not feel that your child can get here safely, please err on the side of caution and keep your child home. The same philosophy applies to calling in an early dismissal. In either case, please call the Office of Student Life at 860.687.6347 to let the school know if your child will be absent or need to leave school early.

Any modern computer running licensed English (required) and multi-language if needed (English and any other language) versions of either Windows 11, or MacOS 15 (Sequoia) or higher will satisfy a student’s computing needs and will be supported by the Loomis Chaffee IT Department.

Non-English language operating systems will not be supported.

Laptop/convertibles and tablets are encouraged for incoming students. Laptops transition well between home and school, allow greater flexibility of use, and can be brought easily to the IT Department if service is required. To ensure warrantee repairs can be completed successfully, we recommend that any new computer purchase occur within the United States. Tablets and Chromebooks should be considered only for media consumption and not relied upon for academic use. The school strongly recommends that a three or four-year service contract be purchased with any new computer or tablet. 

Internet of Things (IOT) devices will not be available to register on the internet. This includes, but is not limited to, wearable AI devices, Apple watches, etc. 

Students are not allowed to use any devices or services on our network that circumvent our security policies, including but not limited to personal routers or VPNs. 

Loomis Chaffee offers free to all students Microsoft Office 365 featuring Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office applications for both PC’s and Mac’s.
