1. When will I receive my class schedule and advisor assignment for the year?

Class schedules and advisor assignments will be made available online toward the end of August. All new students will receive an email with instructions for accessing this information at that time.

2. When will I learn about my housing and roommate assignments?

Housing and roommate assignments will be made available online toward the end of August. If you have a roommate, the information you receive will include your roommate’s name and contact information so you can touch base with each other prior to your arrival at school.

3. When can I buy my books?

The Loomis Chaffee Bookstore will be open throughout Orientation in the days before classes begin. Just bring your class schedule to the classrooms next to the PHI located on the lower level of the Scanlan Campus Center, and the helpful staff there will package up your books for you. Information about the Financial Aid lending library will be emailed to all financial aid recipients prior to arrival on campus in August.

4. Are there lockers available? How do I sign up for one?

There are lockers available in Chaffee Hall and the Athletics Center. At registration, there will be a table you can visit to sign up for a locker in the Athletics Center. Lockers in Chaffee are available for students to use at their leisure; there is no requirement to sign up for one. There are also lockers available on the lower level of Hubbard Music Center for musicians to store their instruments. Students enrolled in music ensemble courses will be assigned lockers in the first week of classes. Music lesson students should see Mr. Hadari for a locker assignment when school begins.

5. Are computers required? If yes, what type of computer should my child have?

All students should have a computer purchased in the United States. Any modern computer running licensed English (required) and multi-language if needed (English and any other language) versions of either Windows 11, or Apple OS 14 (Sonoma) or higher will satisfy a student’s computing needs and will be supported by the Loomis Chaffee IT Department. Loomis Chaffee offers free to all students Microsoft Office 365 featuring Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office applications for both PC’s and Mac’s.

Non-English language operating systems will not be supported.

At a minimum, the school recommends computers with processor speeds of at least 4.0 GHz and memory of at least 8GB. Faster processors and more memory will yield better performance and a longer useable lifetime for the computer. Computers running older operating systems present a security risk to the campus network and will not be able to connect to network resources. Students may bring older computers to campus, but they will not be able to connect to email, the Internet, Instant Messaging, or other network resources.

Teachers may ask a student to bring a laptop to class so we recommend purchasing a laptop computer rather than a desktop computer. Laptops take up less dorm room space, transition well between home and school, allow greater flexibility of use, and can be brought easily to the IT Department if service is required.

Tablets, Chromebooks, and other Netbooks should be considered only for media consumption and not relied upon for academic use.

To assure warrantee repairs can be completed successfully, we recommend that any new computer purchase take place within the United States. The school strongly recommends that a three- or four-year service contract be purchased with any new computer or tablet.

All students must agree to the Acceptable Use Policy before they register for classes.

6. Should I get a laptop or just a tablet?

Laptops are encouraged for incoming students. Laptops take up less dorm room space, transition well between home and school, allow greater flexibility of use, and can be brought easily to the IT Department if service is required. Tablets should be considered only for media consumption and not relied upon for academic use.

7. Do you offer software for academic use?

Loomis Chaffee offers free to all students Microsoft Office 365 featuring Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office applications for both PC’s and Mac’s. Non-English language operating systems will not be supported.

8. What is the dress code?

For the complete Dress Code, please refer to the Student Handbook. Below is an overview of the dress code.

At all times:

  • Clothing should allow the student to fully engage in the school activity in which they are participating.
  • Clothing must not interfere with health or safety or contribute to a hostile environment, including any language or images depicting drugs, alcohol, violence, illegal activity, profanity, hate speech, or pornography.
  • All bodily private areas typically covered by undergarments must be covered by opaque clothing. Undergarments are not acceptable forms of outerwear.
  • Clothing should be clean. Footwear must be worn at all times.

During the class day and in the dining hall:

  • A top must be worn that is opaque and covers the student’s front, back, and sides to the bottom garment. (See Figure 1 below.)
  • A bottom must be worn that is opaque and covers the student’s front, back, and sides to the top garment and cover to the mid-thigh. (See Figure 1 below.)
  • The top and bottom garments must meet or overlap.
  • Shoes intended for both indoor and outdoor use must be worn.

Generally, class day attire will follow the Casual Attire guidelines below. Attire must allow students to engage with the activities they are participating in throughout the academic day. There will be select times students are asked to wear Pelican Attire in order to fully engage with a specific school activity. Examples of these include, but are not limited to, class dinners, classroom presentations, meetings with visitors to campus, away games, or invited speakers.

Casual Attire (for class)
Shorts, pants, jeans, sweatpants/joggers, leggings, skirt, dress, t-shirt, polo, long sleeve shirt, sweater, sweatshirt, hoodie; and shoes. Hats are allowed, provided they do not prohibit a student’s engagement in class as determined by the teacher.

Not appropriate for casual class attire: sleepwear, bath robes.

Pelican Attire
All tops must cover the front and back of the shoulders and all clothing must meet the coverage requirement shown in Figure 1. Tops can include collared shirts, sweaters, blouses, Loomis Chaffee crew neck or hooded sweatshirts. Bottoms can include khakis/chinos, cargos, corduroys, dress pants, or skirts. Dresses are a top and bottom. Leggings may be worn under skirts or dresses.

Not appropriate for Pelican attire: denim, athletic clothing (including t-shirts and non-Loomis Chaffee hoodies), ripped clothing.

9. How do I set up a student bank account for my child?

The Loomis Chaffee Bookstore can assist you in setting up a Student Bank Account during Orientation in early September. This is a cash account where money can be deposited directly by providing (or mailing) a check to the Bookstore made out to “The Loomis Chaffee School.” (Parents setting up the account in person can also deposit cash.) Students can withdraw cash or have a check written as needed. Please note that parents can set withdrawal dollar limits per instance, weekly, or monthly. Unfortunately, at this time, credit cards cannot be used to deposit money into the account.

In addition, students automatically have a school account that allows them to purchase books, supplies, clothing, and other incidentals. The billing of these purchases will be available on the My BackPack portal. This account is linked to the student’s school ID which is required to make any purchases in the Bookstore.

10. What should boarding students pack?

Every student is different, so please consider what works best for you when you pack. We do offer trips to the local mall throughout fall term so you can pick up anything that you decide you need once you get settled.

View room information and a suggested packing list on the Information for Boarding Families page. Happy packing!
