Post-Graduate Student Experience

Day in the Life

Student working in the PHI

A PG year at Loomis is a great opportunity to set yourself up for success in college and life.

The Loomis Chaffee community welcomes 20–25 post-graduate students each year. As a PG you will join our senior class and find yourself quickly integrated into the life of the school in every way imaginable. From residential life, classes, athletics, student leadership, arts, music, and more, you will feel like you have been a member of Pelican Nation for years. You will work closely with our post-graduate student dean to plan how best to take advantage of your year at Loomis and will have a designated advisor who will serve in a mentoring role, and an appointed college counselor who will support you in the college admission process.

“Here I am surrounded by people who are so motivated to be the best they can … [and] that motivates [me] to be a better person in all ways — socially, academically, and athletically.”

“There are tremendous benefits to doing a PG year. It is a great opportunity to live away from home before college and learn how to manage your time, make decisions about your academic program and extracurricular activities, and live in a community with students and faculty from all over the world. I don’t know any PGs who have regretted the decision to enroll at Loomis.

The Benefits of a PG Year at Loomis

Academic Enrichment

As a PG, you can dive deep into subject areas you are passionate about and explore new interests. Regardless of the courses you choose to take you will emerge from your year at Loomis a stronger student with improved skills in writing, critical thinking, problem-solving, and much more.

Personal Growth and Support

A PG year offers a great opportunity to develop your independence, confidence, and leadership skills. Most of our PGs choose to live on campus — a great introduction to living away from home. In addition to the individual support each student gets from their advisors, coaches, and dorm faculty, PGs are supported by the post-graduate dean who hosts regular gatherings to check in and just hang out together.

Finding the Right College

Loomis will meet you wherever you are in the college process, whether you are a recruited athlete already committed to a school or just starting your college search. Your college advisor will work with you one-on-one and help you with everything from course selection for your PG year, developing your college list, and testing support to completing your college and financial aid applications and weighing your options after decisions are released.

Athletic Development

For student-athletes, the PG year provides the opportunity to further hone your athletic abilities in one of New England’s most successful athletics programs and play in some of the most competitive leagues in the country. Your PG year also offers you the opportunity to focus on strength and conditioning and increase your visibility to top colleges and coaches.

Student Spotlight

Rowyn Nurry

We recently caught up with Rowyn Nurry, who is spending a post-graduate year on the Island. He has immersed himself in various activities and says he loves how hands-on the academic experience is at Loomis Chaffee. Also, blueberries, an orca, LeBron James, Steve Jobs, Denzel Washington, staying in the moment, and the Korean dish bibimbap made their way into the conversation.

Program Spotlight: The Innovation Trimester

One of the most distinctive programs at Loomis is our Innovation Trimester (I-Tri). Seniors and PGs enrolled in the I-Tri step away from their regular classes and daily schedule to tackle real-world challenges and offer innovative solutions to problems faced by local businesses and non-profit organizations.
