Concussion Information
Loomis Chaffee is dedicated to the proper diagnosis, care, and support of students recovering from concussions — ensuring a safe return to academics and activities.
The Health Center staff and athletics trainers work in conjunction with the Academic Office and the Counseling Department to facilitate a student’s recovery from concussion and their ongoing success at the school.
Concussion Education
Loomis Chaffee is committed to the safety and well-being of our students, and provides educational materials on concussion policies, protocols, and management to all faculty, staff, students, and families. In addition to printed and online documentation, in-person training sessions for faculty and staff, and presentations to students, Loomis Chaffee has developed specific Return-to-Learn and Return-to-Sport protocols for proper recognition and management of concussions and related concussion medical leaves, and supported resumption of normal academics and school activities.
Yearly Sway Medical Testing
Sway Medical is an FDA Class II medical device used by Loomis Chaffee to assess and manage concussions and head injuries. Using the Sway mobile application, students will be assessed on their cognitive function and balance through a battery of tests including balance, reaction time, memory, and impulse control. Each student will perform a baseline test on Sway upon entry to Loomis Chaffee. Students will additionally complete an updated baseline test at the beginning of their junior year. In the event of a head injury or diagnosed concussion, and in addition to a healthcare provider’s exam, a student will be required to perform a post-concussive sideline assessment or Health Center assessment to compare to their baseline.
