Plagues & Pandemics: An Introduction to Virology

  • Enrichment Courses

Grade Level: Rising 9–11

There are an estimated 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 viruses (and almost as many bacteria) for every human being alive on the planet today. While an overwhelming majority of these viruses are completely harmless (or even beneficial) to humans, some pathogenic microbes can infect humans with devastating consequences; this course is about those microbes. By analyzing outbreaks of microbial disease throughout history, including the current COVID-19 pandemic, we will seek to answer the following questions: What makes a microbe pathogenic? How do microbes spread between people and how do pandemics start? How have outbreaks shaped our society? How does our immune system fight off these infections? And how do vaccines work to prevent the spread of diseases? Armed with an understanding of these ideas, perhaps we could help stop the next pandemic before it starts!
